One of the reasons why I love living in Sydney is because this is a vivid city. From May 25th to June 11th 2012, literally. During the 18-days period, Vivid Sydney - the city's major winter festival - will present us with bright lights, good music and interesting ideas.
Probably the most popular of the three pillars of the event, Vivid lights will be switched on every night of the festival from 6.00pm to midnight in a free lighting display around The Rocks and Circular Quay, featuring 50 interactive and immersive light art sculptures, illuminated skyscrapers and large scale 3D mapping projections on the Sydney Opera House, Museum of Contemporary Art and Customs House.
Vivid Lights will showcase creative light artworks from around the world including France, Poland, Hong Kong, Scotland, USA, Brazil, Singapore and New Zealand. Australia’s artists included in the festival hail from Sydney, South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia, and regional NSW from Wagga Wagga, Goulburn, Maitland and Newcastle.
Focusing on creative ideas, discussion and collaboration, Vivid Ideas is another established part of the event. This year’s program will consist of over 100 events, more than double the creative industry events of previous years, covering topics from electronic gaming to fashion to film and design to publishing, architecture and photography.
Vivid Ideas will connect Australia’s creative industries with global leaders and emerging talent in
a selection of international keynote talks, information sessions
and discussion panels all open to the public and also industry only events including conferences,
workshops, networking and fundraisers. The public program includes a range of free and ticketed
events priced from $15 to $30.
Vivid LIVE will take over the Sydney Opera House with a series of
performances including exclusive concerts, unique collaborations and one-off projects. With over 22 events
including 11 Australian premieres, 2 world premieres and many artists exclusive to Sydney, Vivid LIVE 2012
reinforces Sydney Opera House as the ultimate winter destination for music fans across Australia.
The line-up of local and international artists, includes opening night act – the critically acclaimed English artist Florence + The Machine who will perform with the Ceremonial Orchestra taking over the Concert Hall. Other must see performances (in my opinion) are: R&B superstar Janelle MonĂ¡e making her long awaited Australian debut with ‘The ArchAndroid Orchestra’ and The Temper Trap coming back after near-two-year silence.
